The Legal Limits, Plainly

Arkansas window tint limits are set by Arkansas Code § 27-37-306. Tint darkness is measured as net light transmission — the percentage of light the glass and film together let through. A lower number is darker. The statute applies these limits to 1994 model year vehicles and later, and it phrases them as “at least” a given percentage rather than “more than”:

The practical takeaway: the windows beside the driver are the strict ones, and the rule is the same for every vehicle. Where trucks, buses, motor homes and multipurpose passenger vehicles get latitude is immediately behind the driver. If you drive a sedan and want limousine-dark rear side windows, that is not legally available to you in Arkansas.

The Rules People Do Not Know About

• The label is not what most shops describe. The statute requires a label attached to the front glass immediately to the operator's left, carrying the name and phone number of the company that installed the tint and affirming that the tinting conforms to the section. It is an installer accountability label, not a small sticker tucked under the film.
• Letters and logos over a quarter inch are unlawful on the windows, as is after-market tinting combined with striping material.
• Medical exemptions are specific. A motorist diagnosed by a physician with a condition — the statute names albinism and lupus as examples — may be exempt, and must carry the physician's certification in the vehicle. Since 16 August 2013 the exemption permits at least 20% on the side windows and at least 10% on the rearmost window.
• Out-of-state vehicles are excluded. The section does not apply to vehicles registered in other states that have their own tint legislation.
• Factory glass already blocks light. Your windows are not at 100% before film goes on — most factory glass sits somewhere in the 70s or 80s. The limit applies to the combined result of glass plus film, which is the most common way a driver ends up illegal while believing they are compliant.

That last point is worth repeating because it costs people money: if your glass is 78% VLT and you apply a “35%” film, you do not end up at 35%. You end up at roughly 27%. A competent installer measures rather than assuming.

What Happens If Your Tint Is Illegal

Operating a vehicle with non-compliant after-market tint is unlawful under § 27-37-306 and can be cited. Beyond the citation itself, the practical cost stacks up: you pay to have the illegal film stripped, and then you pay again to have legal film installed if you still want tint. That is three payments for one set of windows.

Enforcement is generally not a priority stop in its own right, but it is a straightforward add-on once a vehicle has been pulled over for something else. It is also the sort of thing that surfaces at an inconvenient moment rather than a convenient one.

Choosing Legal Tint That Still Performs

The good news is that darkness and heat rejection are not the same thing, so complying with Arkansas law does not mean accepting a hot car. A quality ceramic film at a perfectly legal 35% blocks substantially more infrared heat than a cheap dyed film at an illegal 15%. If your actual goal is a cooler interior in an Arkansas August — and for most people it is — spend the money on film quality rather than on darkness.
