You Choose the Shop. Not Your Insurer.

Start here, because it is the thing most drivers get wrong. In Arkansas, the decision about who replaces your auto glass belongs to you. Your insurance company can recommend a provider. It can tell you a particular shop is in its network. What it cannot do is require you to use them as a condition of your claim.

The reason the steering feels so strong is worth understanding. Several large insurers outsource the administration of their glass claims to a third-party administrator — and in the auto glass industry, the largest such administrator is owned by the same parent company as the largest national glass chain. So when you call your insurer's glass line, you may well be talking to a company that also profits from doing the work. That is not illegal and it is not hidden, but it is a conflict of interest you should know about before you accept the first appointment offered.

The script that works: “I'd like to use my own shop. Please open the claim and give me the claim number.” That is the whole conversation.

Arkansas Is Not a Zero-Deductible Glass State

Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina require insurers to waive the deductible on glass claims. Arkansas does not. Here, glass falls under your comprehensive coverage and your comprehensive deductible applies, unless you separately purchased full glass coverage as an add-on.

So the arithmetic is straightforward:

Will a Glass Claim Raise My Premium?

The honest answer is: usually not, but your carrier's rules govern and we are not going to promise you otherwise. Glass damage is a comprehensive claim — a not-at-fault event, like hail or a deer strike — and comprehensive claims are generally treated far more leniently than at-fault collision claims. Many insurers do not surcharge a single glass claim at all.

Where it can matter is frequency. Several comprehensive claims in a short window may affect renewal terms with some carriers. If you have already filed twice this year, it is worth asking the question directly before filing a third time.

How to Actually File

Where Claims Go Wrong

Two failures account for most of the trouble we hear about. The first is recalibration left off the claim — the glass gets replaced, the camera is never recalibrated, and the driver discovers months later that lane keeping has been quietly disabled or, worse, is aiming wrong. The second is accepting an appointment before checking the deductible, then discovering the claim was pointless because the job cost less than the deductible anyway.

Both are avoided by ten minutes of preparation. If you want the cost side of this, our windshield replacement cost page sets out what the work actually runs in Northwest Arkansas.

General information only, not insurance advice. Coverage, deductibles and claim handling vary by policy and carrier — read your declarations page and confirm details with your insurer.

Auto Glass Questions, Answered

Can my insurance company make me use their glass shop?

No. In Arkansas you choose your own auto glass provider. Insurers may recommend a shop, and several outsource glass claims to an administrator connected to a national glass chain, but the choice remains yours.

Does Arkansas have zero-deductible glass coverage?

No. Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina require insurers to waive glass deductibles. Arkansas does not, so your comprehensive deductible applies unless you bought full glass coverage as an add-on.

Will filing a glass claim raise my rates?

Usually not, since glass falls under comprehensive rather than at-fault collision, and many insurers do not surcharge a single glass claim. Frequency can matter, so ask directly if you have already filed recently.

Do I pay anything if I have full glass coverage?

Often nothing for a chip repair, which insurers prefer to fund rather than pay for a replacement later. Replacement may carry a reduced or waived deductible depending on the policy.

Is camera recalibration covered by insurance?

It is a legitimate part of the repair on a camera-equipped vehicle and is generally covered, but it is also the item most often left off a claim. Confirm it is included before the work starts.
