A windshield is structural. A back glass is electrical. Look at your rear window and you will see the fine horizontal lines of the defroster grid printed directly onto the glass. On many vehicles the radio antenna is printed there too, and on hatchbacks and SUVs there is a rear wiper motor and washer line passing through as well.
All of that has to come off the old glass and be correctly reconnected to the new one. The defroster grid connects through two tabs soldered or bonded to the glass at either side; if those are not reattached properly the grid simply does not heat, and you find out on the first frosty morning in November when you are already late. If the antenna is printed in the same glass, a sloppy reconnection shows up as poor radio reception that nobody thinks to blame on the windshield installer.
That final test is the part worth insisting on. Ask the technician to run the defroster and confirm the grid heats before they pack up.
Some rear windows sit in a rubber channel and can be swapped and driven immediately. Most modern back glass is urethane-bonded to the body just like a windshield, which means the same safe drive-away wait applies while the adhesive cures. If your vehicle is bonded, expect the job to take longer than a side window and to involve a cure time before you drive.
Weather matters here for the same reason it does on a windshield replacement — urethane needs dry, reasonably warm conditions to bond correctly, so heavy rain can move a mobile appointment into a covered bay.
